How much does a punching bag weigh?

A punching bag is not an accessory you buy at random. It's a full-fledged training tool, and its weight determines everything: the quality of the session, technical progress, and joint safety. Most punching bags available on the market weigh between 15 kg and 60 kg, sometimes more for pro models intended for heavyweights. But this figure alone is not enough. The right bag weight depends on the practitioner's build, fighting style, the type of sport practiced, and their goals. A bag that's too light flies all over the place with every punch. A bag that's too heavy breaks the dynamic of the movement and tires the hands. This guide covers all aspects to help you choose a bag that truly matches your use, level, and ambitions.

What is the weight of a filled punching bag?

Filled punching bags (delivered already stuffed) display a weight that varies according to their length and padding. Here are the standard benchmarks found in most brands on the market, including Metal Boxe. A 90 cm punching bag generally weighs around 25 kg. This is the lightest format, suitable for fist work in boxing or for young practitioners. A 120 cm model weighs around 30 to 35 kg: versatile, it is suitable for boxing as well as fitness and impact strength training. The 150 cm punching bag, a reference for kickboxing, goes up to about 40 kg. And the large 180 cm formats, designed for Muay Thai and kickboxing, reach 50 kg and more. These are the bags found in professional gyms, those that can take low kicks, circular kicks, and knees without flinching.

Our hanging punching bags come in these four sizes. Each model is delivered with homogeneous fabric scraps filling, which guarantees consistent density throughout the surface. This regularity protects the hands and ensures a natural striking sensation, similar to what you feel when facing an opponent. For those who prefer to adjust the density and weight themselves, some models are also available delivered empty, ready to be filled according to your preferences.

Recommended weight according to your build

There's a common rule in the boxing world: the ideal punching bag weight is approximately 50% of the practitioner's body weight. A 70 kg boxer would opt for a 35 kg punching bag. A 90 kg athlete would choose a 50 kg punching bag. A 60 kg beginner can start with a 30 kg punching bag without issue. This method provides a reliable benchmark, but it doesn't cover all cases.

The choice of weight also depends on the objective. For working on speed, quick combinations, and coordination, a light bag that moves more forces you to constantly adjust distance and timing. It's an excellent tool for improving movement reading. To develop power and physical strength, a heavy bag and dense one is preferable. It absorbs punches without moving back, allowing you to strike with full force, throwing straights, hooks, and uppercuts with conviction. The practitioner can focus on striking technique without worrying about the swing. In summary, the recommended weight isn't just about morphology. It's also a matter of style, discipline, and training phase.

What truly determines the weight of a punching bag

Two punching bags of the same size can have very different weights. The reason lies in the padding. The filling material determines the density, the feel upon impact, and the product's durability.

Bags filled with fabric scraps offer a soft touch, consistent absorption, and good longevity. This is the standard for club training. Sand-based bags are denser, heavier for the same volume, but also harder. Sand is suitable for experienced practitioners looking to strengthen impact zones (shins, fists), less so for beginners or long sessions. A mix of fabric and sand is a popular option: a sandbag at the bottom for stability, fabric on top for striking comfort. You can also find EVA foam fillings (as on our Indiana range), rubber granules, or water for aqua bag type models. Each material changes the weight, the impact response, and the feel of the session. A 40 kg bag filled with fabric does not feel at all like a 40 kg bag filled with sand. The number on the scale is the same. The bag experience is not.

The outer covering also plays a role in the perception of quality. Genuine leather (full-grain buffalo leather, for example) offers superior resistance and a noble feel, perfect for intensive and professional use. PU synthetic leather, more affordable, remains very resistant and is largely sufficient for regular training. Vinyl and PVC are suitable for entry-level models or children's punching bags.

Suspended bag or free-standing bag: different weights, different uses

A 120 cm suspended punching bag weighs around 35 kg. It is hung from the ceiling or on a bracket with steel chains. With each impact, the bag swings. This pendulum movement forces the boxer to manage distance, adjust their footwork, and work on their movement. This is what makes this format so effective for progressing in boxing, Muay Thai, or French boxing.

A free-standing punching bag works very differently. The weight doesn't come from the bag itself, but from the base that is filled with water or sand (often between 80 and 100 kg). The punching cylinder remains relatively light, but the whole forms a self-supporting and stable structure. No ceiling fixation, no drilling, no wall bracket. You place the base on the ground, weigh it down, and punch. At Metal Boxe, our models like the Tower Bag or the Power Spin II are height-adjustable, allowing you to adapt the striking zone to the morphology of each user. Whether for straights, uppercuts, kicks, or knees, the base holds without tipping over.

The punching ball and punching dummy are still other formats. The double-ended punching bag develops timing and reflexes. The dummy simulates a standing opponent, ideal for working on realistic strike zones. Each type of bag corresponds to a specific objective, and the weight varies considerably from one format to another.

How much does a punching bag for children weigh?

A children's punching bag weighs between 10 and 20 kg, with a length of 60 to 90 cm. The ideal child weight is around 10 to 15 kg for those under 10, and can go up to 20 kg for teenagers. The goal is not power. It's learning the movement, foot placement, precision, and coordination. A children's bag that is too heavy discourages, tires joints, and establishes bad striking habits.

Our range includes shorter, lighter boxing bags for children, with a PVC or microfiber coating for a softer strike. The padding is calibrated to absorb shocks without harming growing bodies. Because even at 8 or 10 years old, good bag habits can be learned. And those habits stay with you.

How to install a punching bag according to its weight

A 40 kg punching bag hanging from the ceiling pulls constantly. The chains transmit the weight to the hook, the hook to the ceiling, and each impact adds a dynamic overload that can easily double the felt load. A plaster or plasterboard ceiling will not hold. You need concrete, a load-bearing beam, or a suitable wall mount. Ignoring this criterion is risking an accident.

Our brackets, platforms, and fixings are designed to support loads of up to 100 kg, with reinforced anchor points and a factory-tested steel structure. Fixed wall bracket, foldable bracket for space saving, or self-supporting gantry that can be weighted with cast iron discs: each option meets a different space configuration. For a 50 kg suspended bag, we recommend a solid fixation with at least 6 points, with a chain and resistant carabiner. The installation material affects both the safety of the session and the quality of the training. A poorly fixed bag that swings crookedly means a wasted session. And added risks.

Protecting your hands when hitting a heavy bag

Every impact on a 40 or 50 kg punching bag stresses the knuckles, wrist, and small bones on the back of the hand. The heavier the bag, the more the joints take a beating. Without protection, micro-traumas accumulate, day after day, session after session. This is how tendinitis, wrist sprains, and stress fractures occur.

Boxing gloves are the first line of defense. For bag work, a 10 or 12 oz glove is sufficient: compact, resistant, it effectively transmits the power of the punch while absorbing impact return. For sparring, move up to 14 or 16 oz for better protection. Under the gloves, boxing wraps stabilize the bone structure, limit twisting, and absorb sweat. At Metal Boxe, we recommend always wrapping your hands before putting on gloves, regardless of the session duration. It's a gym reflex, a few minutes that can prevent weeks of downtime. Whether you're a beginner or a professional, hitting a 30 kg punching bag or a 70 kg punching bag, the rule remains the same: protect your hands first, then punch.

How to choose your punching bag: the important criteria

Choosing a punching bag means considering several criteria simultaneously. Weight comes first, but it's not enough. The size of the bag must correspond to the discipline practiced: 90 to 120 cm for boxing (fist work), 150 to 180 cm for kickboxing sports like Muay Thai, kickboxing, or French boxing. The outer material determines durability: leather for intensive use, PU for good value for money, vinyl for initial equipment.

Available space also influences the choice. A hanging bag requires sufficient ceiling height and reliable mounting. A free-standing bag can be placed anywhere, from the garage to the living room. And budget comes into play: our Metal Boxe punching bags offer a range from the Club Line model (affordable, resistant, ideal for beginners) to the Jupiter in full-grain buffalo leather (55 kg, high-end punch). Whatever your level, discipline, or objective, the right bag is the one that makes you want to hit it again, day after day.
