What equipment is necessary for MMA practice?

Are you new to MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)? You've come to the right place! At Metal Boxe, we understand that this discipline requires complete and versatile equipment, adaptable to each fighter. Whether you're a beginner or aiming for professional competition, you'll need gear suited to this hybrid discipline. We'll explain everything about it in this comprehensive guide to MMA equipment.

Punching bag gloves, sparring gloves, mouthguard, groin protector, MMA shorts, rashguard, shin guards (often provided by your gym)… You'll need to purchase a few items to be prepared for your first class. Unlike boxing equipment and Thai boxing equipment, MMA equipment is for a stand-up and ground fighting sport and meets a dual requirement: allowing striking while standing and ensuring freedom of movement on the ground.

At Metal Boxe, every product in the MMA range is designed for mixed practice: wear resistance, comfort during sparring, and effectiveness in grappling or ground phases. Whether you're an amateur or a confirmed fighter, the quality of your combat equipment makes all the difference, and choosing Metal Boxe for your gear means ensuring products that are standardized and tested year-round by our professional fighter partners.

MMA Gloves: Open or Closed?

Not all MMA gloves are designed the same way: open for grappling, closed or more padded for training, and more or less padded depending on the use (bag work, sparring, competition). Our MMA gloves use high-density foam, a technical cut, and a snug fit. At Metal, our definition of a good glove for this martial art is one that protects both the hand and wrist while leaving the fingers free for grappling or takedowns. Be aware, however, that not all gloves are suitable for all fighters; the choice of glove will also depend on your skill level and the type of session (sparring or bag work).

Shin Guards, Headgear, and Groin Protectors: Don't Skimp

Training without adequate protection obviously increases the risk of injury. Metal Boxe's MMA shin guards are designed for both ground combat and standing kicks, so you'll lose very little mobility. Most of the time, you won't need to buy them: your gym is supposed to provide this equipment.

For the groin protector, which is integrated into shorts or worn with briefs, it protects the crotch without hindering mobility. Essential in all martial disciplines, it is designed to absorb direct impacts without altering ground position. These accessories are often neglected, but they ensure continuous training without interruption.

Rashguards, Shorts, Shoes: The Importance of Apparel

Textile is central to performance. The rashguard limits friction, wicks away sweat, and keeps muscles warm. Our models, designed for intensive training, feature flat seams, a second-skin fit, and breathable material. MMA shorts have no inner seams, a flat waistband, and a stretch area in the crotch to facilitate grappling. For grappling or wrestling, they ideally complete the ensemble. As for wrestling shoes, they remain useful in certain physical preparation or technical work formats.

How to Choose Your MMA Equipment Based on Your Skill Level?

A beginner will prioritize safety and comfort: padded gloves, mouthguard, flexible rashguard, and well-fitting shorts. An experienced practitioner will look for more technical gear, capable of withstanding the intensity of ground fighting as well as striking. An athlete preparing for a competition will need optimized equipment: anatomical shape, reinforced materials, and precise fit. Each Metal Boxe model is designed to support real progression, from amateur to professional. The discipline requires equipping yourself according to the training phase: wrestling, ground work, punching bag, standing sparring, free fight, or cage.

What Equipment for MMA Competition?

Competition imposes strict standards. Approved 4oz gloves, mouthguard, rigid groin protector, shorts without hard elements, approved rashguard. Metal Boxe offers a selection compatible with amateur and professional circuits, used in many clubs in France. Each product in the MMA shorts range has been tested under real conditions. We also offer complementary equipment: focus mitts, punching masks, punching bags, and hand wraps for coaches and training partners.

What Equipment for MMA Training?

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) training is varied and often more intensive than the fights themselves. It requires equipment that is robust, comfortable, and adapted to different types of work: striking, wrestling, ground work. For effective training, we recommend:

  • padded MMA mitts or gloves to protect joints. (Not too thick to facilitate ground grip during specific training sessions (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling))
  • reinforced shin guards, sometimes integrated into pants or leggings,
  • a rashguard and flexible shorts, resistant to pulling and friction, ideal for ground takedowns.
  • a mouthguard suitable for regular use,
  • a comfortable groin protector even during long sessions.

At Metal Boxe, all our MMA training equipment is designed to last: technical materials, reinforced seams, breathability, and optimal support. We also provide coaches' tools: focus mitts, Thai pads, weighted punching bags, punching masks, and hand wraps, all guaranteed for 2 years.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned competitor, good training always starts with good equipment, and Metal Boxe has understood this thanks to its experience and the many French clubs we supply. No matter your fighting style or weight category, you will always find the right gloves and MMA equipment among our ranges.

MMA Equipment FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

What equipment is mandatory for practicing MMA in a club?

Generally, clubs require at least: MMA gloves (with open palm), mouthguard, groin protector, shin guards (especially for amateurs), MMA shorts without dangerous fasteners for practicing MMA. A rashguard is often recommended for hygiene and comfort during grappling phases.

What is the difference between boxing gloves and MMA gloves?

MMA gloves are smaller, open-palmed, and allow for grabbing, grappling, or submissions. Boxing gloves are closed, padded to absorb impact from strikes only.

Can you use a kimono or gi in MMA?

No, MMA is not practiced with a kimono (we leave that to judo!). However, for ground work, some practitioners grapple with a rashguard and shorts, which allow greater freedom of movement and prevent being grabbed by clothing.

Is a mouthguard really necessary?

Yes, always. It protects your teeth, jaw, and can even reduce the risk of concussion. A good quality thermoformable mouthguard is an essential investment.

Shin guards: Do I need a special MMA model?

Yes, because MMA shin guards must be both thin (so as not to hinder grappling) and sufficiently reinforced to absorb low kicks. Thai boxing models are sometimes used, but some are too rigid for MMA.

Can I wear classic shorts for MMA?

No, classic shorts (with pockets or fasteners) are forbidden because they are dangerous. MMA shorts are designed without snags or zippers, with reinforced seams, to withstand pulling and ensure safety.

Rashguard: useful or not?

Very useful, especially for: preventing mat burns, keeping muscles warm, absorbing sweat, limiting direct skin-to-skin contact. It has become an almost essential item, especially in grappling.

How to maintain your MMA equipment?

Gloves: air out after each training session, disinfect regularly with antibacterial spray.
Textiles: wash at 30°C, no tumble drying.
Mouthguard: rinse and store in a ventilated box.

How much does a complete set of equipment for starting MMA cost?

Approximately €100 to €200 for a quality complete pack (gloves, shorts, mouthguard, groin protector, rashguard, shin guards). At Metal Boxe, you will find ready-to-use packs tested by professionals.

Is there specific equipment for children?

Yes! There are junior MMA gloves, shin guards adapted for small sizes, and children's rashguards. The equipment must be more flexible, lighter, and safer.

How do I know if my gloves are worn out and need to be replaced?

Common signs: flattened or uneven foam, loose seams, persistent odor, ineffective protection (pain after impacts). It's better to be safe than sorry: worn-out gloves can lead to injuries.

Can you mix equipment from different brands?

Yes, as long as they are compatible and of good quality. But sticking to a single brand, like Metal Boxe, often guarantees consistency in comfort, sizes, and durability.

What equipment should I bring to a competition or training camp?

Here is the minimum to bring: approved gloves, mouthguard, groin protector, regulation shorts/rashguard, a second change of clothes, towel, water bottle, tape, warming cream. Preparing your bag in advance helps avoid stress on the day.

What is the best equipment for rapid progress in MMA?

Equipment that doesn't bother you, protects you well, and makes you want to train! Investing in good gear allows you to train more often, longer, and limit injuries. There are no miracle recipes; you'll need to improve your technique and physical condition first and foremost!

How to choose the right size for your equipment?

Each brand has its size guide. At Metal Boxe:
- gloves are chosen by Oz (generally 6 to 10 Oz for MMA),
- rashguards and shorts according to your measurements (S, M, L, XL...),
- groin protectors and shin guards also come in different sizes.
