Starting Muay Thai: Essential Equipment
Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is a complete and demanding martial art that engages the entire body.
To start under good conditions, it is essential to be properly equipped.
Here is the essential equipment for beginners.
Gloves
Muay Thai boxing gloves are the central element of a boxer's equipment. Their weight generally varies from 10 to 16 oz depending on the training (sparring, bag, etc.). They protect the boxer's hands and their training partner.
Handwraps or inner gloves
Worn under gloves, handwraps or inner gloves ensure good wrist and joint support, thereby reducing the risk of injury.
Muay Thai Shorts
The Thai shorts are short, light, and loose, designed not to hinder leg and hip movements. They also reflect the strong identity of this sport, with traditional and modern designs.
Shin guards
Leg work is intense in Muay Thai. To avoid pain and injuries during training or sparring, shin guards are mandatory. Choose padded ones, with a good attachment to the calf and foot.

Protective gear
For both men and women, the groin guard protects sensitive areas during fights or sparring. The mouthguard is essential to prevent dental injuries and concussions. A thermoformable model offers a good compromise between comfort and protection.
Accessories
The jump rope is a simple but highly effective tool for warming up, improving footwork, and cardio. Used in all clubs, it is an integral part of a Thai boxer's physical preparation.
Training is done barefoot, but movement within the gym (changing room, restrooms, ringside) is done with flip-flops for hygiene reasons.
If you start technical sparring, wearing a helmet may be required.
